After my first experience with this paint, I promised I would try it again but this time on a larger project. I used Valspar Chalk Paint to give my office desk a total make over. As you will see I am pretty excited by the way it turned out!
You already know from my last post about this paint that I was a bit nervous to use this again because it could be pretty expensive if I needed to use multiple coats. You can read more about my first Valspar Chalk Paint product review here.
The desk I am making over is super ugly and dark! I have had this desk for years, it was given to me by my uncle and I wanted to get rid of it. After my office was remodeled we realized this desk just so happened to be a perfect fit for the space.
What I did differently?
Unlike my last project, I disregarded the instructions about not sanding down my item. I decided to sand down the desk. I wanted to make sure I did everything in my power to make this product work. I did not want my desk to chip or crack.
First Step:
I sanded down past the stain and the clear coat until the desk was smooth. To be totally honest this was not the easiest task. The desk legs were very awkward and hard to sand. There were places I really had to use a sheet of sanding paper and lots of elbow grease to reach.
Next Step:
Once the desk was completely sanded down, I cleaned it down with a damp cloth. I needed to make sure there was no dust left anywhere. Loose dust and debris will cause cracking and chipping of the paint later. Once I did a thorough wipe down, I let the desk air dry for a few hours.
The paint color I decided to use this time is called Satin Ribbon. It is my favorite color, Pink! I went out on a limb and only purchased one can of Valspar Chalk Paint.
Painting:
I applied my first coat with a roller and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it covered. Unlike my first experience with this paint it seemed that one coat went along way.
After applying this first coat I let the desk dry for 3-4 hours. After seeing how far that first coat went, I decided to do another coat just to provide a bit better coverage. I still had lots of paint left int he can this time.
I ended up loving the color so much, that I decided not to distress the desk. I did come over with the Valspar Clear Sealing Wax once I was satisfied with the look.
This picture was taken this week and so it has been about 6 months since I actually completed this desk make over, so I think the paint is holding up nicely!
Don’t judge me by how messy my desk is! That is where the magic happens, where I go to create awesome freebies just for you!
My Honest Opinion on Valspar Chalk Paint:
- After this project, using the Valspar Chalk Paint, I have no more reservations about this product. I am more than happy with the outcome & I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get into chalk paint without making a huge investment.
- I feel like this paint has been holding up nicely, even through all the wear and tear I throw at it. I mean let’s face it, I use this desk over 40 hour a week!
- This paint has actually saved me money because I was going to throw this desk out and purchase a new one. With my luck I would never have found another desk to fit my crazy small space and I would have needed a custom one made. Crisis adverted!
- Overall this paint is super easy to use! I think a novice painter would have no problem at all figuring this system out!
